BIO

My name is Oliver Hongell and I have a serious zeal for creating, which has happily led me towards the path of design. For me, I’ve always had a childish joy towards creating, from the excitement of producing raw and fresh ideas, to eagerly observing the surrounding world reacting and interacting with these manifested ideas.

The path of design has opened up numerous possibilities for creativity, where newfound knowledge and skill has expanded the way I and other students process and approach new ideas and challenges, which is why the Studio 6 rotary tool brief has been an exciting challenge to undertake.

The task was simple: “Develop a multiuse rotary tool, capable of drill driving, using the roots of brand that doesn’t associate with tools.” For me and three other students, renowned appliance juggernaut, Delonghi, was selected, providing a strong and unique frame featuring their Italian heritage and distinctive family styling. User and brand research determined that Delonghi, as a company, is associated strongly within a kitchen environment, providing the who and where, though the what and why was still required: What should this tool do? Why should it do it? Further research indicated that food processors and mixers are the most frequently used appliances in the kitchen, though users find the current line-up lacking in quality and are quite overpriced.

With the narratives established, team Delonghi was set to create a high quality, multiuse food processing, drill driving, rotary tool oriented towards kitchen use. My presented iterations, initial and final, based on a Dremel orientation, consist of Delonghi’s design formula: classic, 50s retro styling, organic body shapes and simplistic, analogue interfaces. The completed design will provide users with a versatile, high quality and very stylish appliance capable of all types of kitchen work, even building the kitchen.
