My journey here at UniSA has taught me what it means to be a designer and why design is so important. Being a designer is an altruistic act within which we take on the responsibility of improving our way of life around us. The skills and tools I’ve acquired over the years have given me a strong foundation in design principles and processes, which I can now apply with ease across any industry that requires analytical and innovative design thinking and strategy.

The capstone project in our final year was to conceptualise and develop a prototype of a rotary multitool within the brand NZXT – an American computer hardware manufacture with a focus around PC gaming.

This project would portray a culmination of our skills in research, our ability to design for manufacture, the environment, user needs, etc, all whilst adhering to a specific brand’s visual language.
Our research led to understanding the market we were entering, who our target audience is through the creation of personas, and how we can introduce a product that is undeniably NZXT whilst being made for manufacture and the environment. Sustainability is an important aspect often overlooked and we had to consider materials, finishes, sourcing, producer responsibility schemes (disposal), etc.

Ideation and concept development took us down many paths as we tried to satisfy user needs and metrics. We then screened and scored our concepts to create the most appropriate rotary multitool that was aesthetic, functional, and ergonomic.
